Have you always had a dream of practicing magic with the skill and finesse of a professional magician? Would you like to take your dream to the next level and really learn the art of magic and illusion? You are not alone. We hear from people all the time who want to learn magic to delight an audience, even if that audience is mostly family and friends.
In order to get organized and build a solid foundation for a performance, there are a few areas where you can focus before you actually take to the stage. These tips will help you feel more confident in your abilities which will naturally translate into a stellar performance.
Find A Mentor
If at all possible try to learn from someone who is already practicing magic before a live audience. You do not need to pick their brain to add tricks to your repertoire, simply inquire about their methods and ask for any advice they might be able to offer. If possible, watch them perform and take notes. Pay close attention to how they interact with their audience as this can be a good measure of their success.
Present Something New
We are all familiar with the classic pulling the rabbit from the hat or sawing an assistant in half so you will probably want to steer clear of those unless you can recreate the trick and make something new. As you build your collection of tricks, look for those that are not as common and also work to create your own tricks. Once you understand the mechanics of magic it will be easier to come up with something completely original.
Dress The Part
A costume will expand on who you are as a person to include who you want to be as a magician. The more flamboyant your act, the more your costume should stand out. Even jeans and a t-shirt can work for you depending on your style. Try and create a show that features a magician, dazzling magic and equipment that all work flawlessly together, including visually. Don't forget that many tricks need you to have many hidden pockets so buy your costume to work with your act.
